We bind to the specifications of all major New Zealand universities, including the University of Auckland, AUT, Massey and Otago. Standard thesis binding is in hard cover with gold-foil lettering on the spine (author, degree and year) and, where required, on the front cover. Soft-cover (limp) binding and temporary binding for examination copies are also available.
Preparing your thesis for binding
Check your margins. Before printing, confirm your university’s binding margin requirements. As a rule, allow at least 30–40mm on the bound (left) edge of each page — the binding process trims and sews into this area, and text too close to the edge can be lost or become difficult to read.
Use good paper. We recommend 100gsm white bond for the text block. Heavily coated or very thin papers do not take adhesive well and can cause problems at the spine.
Print single-sided unless told otherwise. Most universities require single-sided printing for the deposited copies. Examination copies may differ — check with your school or graduate centre.
Bring a complete, collated copy. Pages must be in final order, including title page, abstract, table of contents, and any plates or fold-outs. Fold-outs larger than A4 should be folded before you bring the thesis in, or ask us to advise.
A note on paper grain
If your thesis is not standard A4 portrait — for example, an A4 landscape architecture portfolio or an A3 art-school submission — paper grain direction becomes critical. Paper must be bound with the grain running parallel to the spine; bound against the grain, pages will not lie flat and the book will not open properly. If you are printing a non-standard format, please talk to us before printing so we can advise on paper selection and grain direction. It is far easier to get right at the printer than to fix afterwards.
